Eating Right for the Holiday Season!

The holiday season is upon us. This means lots of parties, good times and temptation. Here are a few tips for staying healthy and in shape through the holiday season.

Thanksgiving:
This can be a very healthy meal with many yummy treats. This can also be a diet disaster. Remember to take a nice long walk before you eat, and if you can muster it, after you eat as well. Drink lots of water through out the day. Snack on veggies, because you will be able to splurge more when the meal comes. I like to take portions of the healthy things first, then when I’m done, and if I’m still hungry, I’ll go after the naughty foods. Also when it comes to alcohol, and the units consumed, try to stick to two glasses of wine. It has less calories and more healthful benefits.

First Plate: Don’t forget to drink plenty of water.
A portion of turkey no larger than the size of your fist, and for the gravy, just a tablespoon. Cranberry sauce, a third of the size of your fist. Sweet potatoes, if they are not candied, the portion should be a third the size of your fist. Any veggies, remember to try to get a little bit of everything, with a portion the size of your fist.

Second Plate: Still continue with the water consumption.
If you’re still hungry, you can now have the things you love, however, make sure that all the portions add up to the size of your fist. This will leave a little bit of room for some dessert, Pumpkin Pie! Again, dessert portions should be a third of the size of your fist.

Now go for a walk for as long as you can or time will allow.

Holiday Parties:

Holiday Parties can be so much fun and quite delicious. You can also easily pack on the pounds in one evening. Remember to walk as much as you can and laugh as much as you can. Laughing burns calories too! So here are a few tips that will help curb all those naughty thoughts.

Before You Go Out:
-Make sure to drink lots of water. This helps to make you feel full, helps your skin glow and it can deter any hangovers that may occur after a night of drinking.
-Eat a salad with light dressing or olive oil, pepper and lemon. Having this will get your veggies in you, but also you won’t be starving and then eat the first thing that you lay your eyes on.

At The Party:
-Eat as many veggies as you can handle
-When it comes to dips, be sparing
-The cheese plate is one of my favorites. Stick to four pieces of cheese. This may mean picking a favorite and eating just a few slices.
-Little appetizers going around. If you like, you can try them all or pick your favorite, in moderation of course.
-Try to stay away from anything fried.
-For alcohol, stick to wine, and no more than two glasses. This is enough to have a nice evening out and you won’t wake up with a hangover
-Drink plenty of water

Have fun this Holiday Season and please be safe and responsible!!!!
